Rugby World Cup 2011 – Round 5 Predictions and Preview

This weekend’s Rugby World Cup action sees the highly anticipated All Blacks vs France game.

No one who saw the RWC2007 quarter-final, read about it, heard about it or has any interest in rugby whatsoever will forget the massive upset and furore on that fateful day 4 years ago. A day that will live long in RWC folklore, when Les Tricolores said ‘vas te faire encule’ to all who wrote them off in the game to beat the mighty All Blacks and once again brand them with the much unwanted ‘chokers tag’.

New Zealand vs France All Black Chockers

There are other games this weekend though and much accurate predicting will be needed for those in search of the elusive Superbru yellow cap.

Here are my RWC2011 predictions for this weekend.

RWC2011 England vs Romania – Sat 24th Sept at 8:00am (SA time)

Only die-hard English fans and the families of the Romanian team will care very much about this game. Romania have impressed with their scrums and forwards so far and will be looking to put pressure on England in these very same areas.  England have been ill-disciplined in both their games so far and if Romania can kick accurately at posts they may well stay close for a while but England should win this comfortably and secure their spot in the quarter-finals.

Prediction: England by 35-45

RWC2011 New Zealand vs France – 24 Sept at 10:30am

No one’s favourite, Marc Lievremont, has decided to rest some of his star players and has even gone as far as picking scrumhalf, Morgan Parra at flyhalf, a position he has only played at this level at once, as a replacement for 20min recently. The New Zealand media are mostly pissed off at this and have not been shy (are they ever?) to slam the French coach.

France vs New Zealand Rugby World Cup 2011

Graham Henry and Co. have stayed mostly diplomatic and are wisely concentrating on their own preparations. It looks likely that Dan the man Carter will be selected for this game and the All Blacks will be going all out to exact some RWC revenge on the erratic French. History has shown you can never write off a French rugga team in any game but expect the All Blacks to take this game comfortably.

Prediction: All Blacks by 15-25

RWC2011 Fiji vs Samoa – Sunday 24th of Sept at 4:30am

Both these sides can still technically make the play-offs if certain results go their respective ways, although both will need to win on Sunday to have any chance at all. Samoa are traditionally the stronger side and form shown so far in this RWC indicates a Samoan victory. Both sides play physical, running rugby which should be highly entertaining. Expect tries aplenty in this game with Samoa keeping their wafer thin hopes of a quarter-final alive.

Prediction: Samoa by 10-17

RWC2011 Ireland vs Russia – Sun 24th of Sept at 7:00am

Ireland were awesome in the forward exchanges against the Wallabies. They face-smashed the Aussie scrum and were ferocious at the breakdown and are now firm favourites to finish top of their group. Russia were competitive against USA but were destroyed by a poor Italian side recently. The Irish will be hoping for no injuries in this game as they build momentum leading up to the far more important and tricky game next week against the Italians.

Prediction: Ireland by a leprechaun’s todger (which is pretty big if you didn’t know)

RWC2011 Argentina vs Scotland – Sun 24th of September at 9:30am

This game will basically decide who finishes 2nd in this group with England almost definitely finishing at the top. Argentina were ruthless against Georgia while Scotland played one of the more boring games in RWC history against the same opponents. Argentina have the more dominant scrum and better tactical kicking game and should win this probable drab affair, comfortably.

Prediction: Argentina by 7-17
