Springbok Team for the RWC2011: As predicted by the Bowl

Pieter de Villiers and Co. will be mightily relieved that the Bokke managed to pull off a morale boosting victory against the All Blacks last Saturday and despite the fact that it was largely a ‘B’ side, the Bokke can rightfully claim to be the last side to have beaten the mighty All Blacks.

Put that in your mouth and chew on it world…hmmmm delicious.

I find it laughable that some ex All Black players have suggested that the Bokke should not have recently rested their best players and should have rather played them to build up momentum ahead of the RWC. When I last checked the majority of ex All Black players have never won a World Cup, so perhaps keep your suggestions to yourself, Justin Marshall.

The teams who have won the RWC may not score the most tries but they have historically been the best defensive sides in the tournaments, with the most accurate kickers. The current players in the Bok team know how to play the kind of rugby that wins World Cups and the fact that they recently showed that they are willing and able to do so, should bring a smile to every Bok fan’s green and gold painted face.

Everyone has their favourite favourite and there have been some pretty outlandish sides put forward by so-called rugby experts, eg: Johann Sadie at centre, Schalk Brits at hooker, Joe Van Niekerk at 8th man… really guys, really?

Below is my ideal Bok Rugby World Cup squad.

Backs: Fourie du Preez, Morne Steyn, Bryan Habana, Jean de Villiers, Jaque Fourie, JP Pietersen, Pat Lambie, Fran Hougaard, Butch James, Jano Vermaak, Juan De Jongh, Frans Steyn, Gio Aplon, Lwazi Mvovo.

Forwards: The Beast, Bismark du Plessis, Jannie Du Plessis, Bakkies Botha, Victor Matfield, Heinrich Brussow, Schalk Burger, Pierre Spies, Gurthro Steenkamp, CJ Van Der Merwe, John Smit (C), Chilliboy Ralapelle, Danie Rossouw, Frans Louw, Ashley Johnson, Flip Van de Merwe.

I realise Vermaak has not been part of the squad before but he is by far one of the best scrumhalves in the country.

I reckon PdV will go with Ruan Pienaar instead of Vermaak because he has a massive man crush on him and he may well include Adi even I don’t think I should be here Jacobs instead of Mvovo too, so don’t be surprised.

Love it, hate it, let us know your ideal squad.

The Springbok squad will be announced tonight at 7pm.
