Super rugby Preview – Week 13, part 1

A thousand apologies for failing to post last week’s Supe Rugby preview. I was out of the country on an action adventure drinking mission in Mozambique. So so many quality 2M beers, so little time. Thank you SAB Miller, we salute you.

Onto this week’s action adventures and all to play for, especially for the teams in the top half of the tables. Large and in charge games kick off the viewing on Friday, so read on, let’s take a gander into the nitty-gritty of it all.

Highlanders vs Hurricanes

The Highlanders started the season very well, possibly better than ever before. They have, however been less impressive recently and have been hit by injuries losing two wingers and their talisman, Adam smash it up and score Thompson. He has been in sublime form and with him out the Landers look less intimidating.

The Hurricanes are on an upward curve and have Piri Weepu back in the squad for the first time this season, after recovering from his horrific ankle injury and Ma’a Nonu is back and dreadlocked ready. The Canes will know that they have the slimmest of supermodel slim chances of making the play-offs but will need to win every remaining game to do so. Expect a typical derby game with the Canes winning a close one.

Venue: Rugby Park, Invercargill

Kick-Off: Fri, 9:35am

Prediction: Hurricanes by 3-10.

Reds vs Blues

The Reds have not looked as good recently, (possibly due to fatigue) but have a near full strength team and a bye next week, so will be keen on another victory before their break. Burglar Cooper has had a great season, a great season and his partnership with Will Genia will once again spark an impressive backline into home-crowd pleasing action.

The Blues have injuries in key positions and may well struggle to dominate in this game. They still have quality players all over the park though and will be up for a good battle but I don’t see them winning away in Brisbane.

Venue: Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Kick-Off: 11:40am

Prediction: Reds by 10

Chiefs vs Stormers

The Stormers were mostly average last week. Unfortunately it looked like Alistair Coetzee figured that they could win against the Crusaders by tackling them into mistakes. FAIL. Jaque Fourie played a blinder but there was not enough variation in their attack to really trouble the injury hit Crusaders team.

Unfortunately for the Stormers, the substitutes just did not perform up to standard. Perhaps the coach should not have brought them all on at the same time (just saying). Ricky McDonalds Januarie still looks overweight and Tiaan Liebenberg looked understandably rusty and his poor throwing cost the Stormers crucial, attacking line out ball.

The Chiefs recovered well after a rugby lesson at Loftus 2 weeks ago, to beat the Highlanders last week. They are a dangerous team and with man mountain Lelia Masaga in smash it in your face form, they are capable of beating any team on the day. The Stormers should dominate the line-outs and scrums and if they can control the rucks and mauls, will provide their backs with plenty of opportunities. Peter Grant is back and although short on game time, should slot in comfortably.

Venue: Waikato Stadium, Hamilton

Kick-Off: Sat, 09:35am

Prediction: Stormers by 5-10
