Preview: Currie Cup Semi-Final WP vs Cheetahs

Can Western Province finally live up to expectations and make the Currie Cup final next week?

Will the Cheetahs once again prove that they have mastered the art of upsetting more fancied opponents?

When asked for comment these lovely girls had this to say “Cheetahs! Ra Ra Ra” which is a good point.

On paper this WP side looks superior in most departments but let’s launch into cliché’s head first… the game is not played on paper and thank goodness it isn’t. Two words: paper cuts.

Having lost Jaque Fourie to injury, Alistair Coetzee has fallen back on the tried and tested and awesome combination of Jean De Villiers and Juan De Jongh. WP have pace aplenty and with Gio Aplon and Brian Habana on the wings, may be looking to take on the Cheetahs out wide. The forwards will once again be looking to replicate the form shown last week against the Sharks.

Players to watch:

Duane Vermeulen – Is playing incredible rugby and has done so all season. Looking to smash his way into the Bok squad for the EOYT.

Brian Habana – Apparently faster than ever and desperate to restore his slightly dented reputation. Word has it he has been racing actual Cheetahs in preparation. When asked to elaborate on this rumour he had this to say “Bitch please”. Well played Sir, you win this round.

Schalk burger – He has been part of two losing semi finalist teams in the Currie Cup and will be desperate to make the finals in his third attempt. Expect huge hits and reckless disregard for personal safety.

The Cheetahs have been without their talisman Heinrich Brussouw since March but have unearthed some quality forwards in Hendro Scholtz and a welcome return to form by Ashley Afro Johnson.

They have beaten WP recently and probably fancy their chances of a repeat upset. Naka Drotske is a wily coach with a great Currie Cup track record and WP will do well not to underestimate this team. If only the Cheetahs would perform half as well in the Super 15…

Players to watch:

Juan Smith – Captain of Industry. Has had a sublime season and one of the players of the Tri-Nations. Puts in huge hits on defence and leads by example.

Coenie Oosthuizen – The huge prop has scored 6 tries this season and is surely in the running for the EOYT. Expect more of the same from this man mountain.

Ashley Johnson – Broke Lion supporter’s hearts a couple of weeks ago with the best game he has played all season. Great skill, pace and solid defence. Also, awesome hair.

This will be another epic game in front of a packed Newlands crowd. My money is on Province to make the final and host the Bulls in two weeks time. Say it with me Prooooviiiince.

Kick off: 5pm

Prediction: WP by 5-10.
