World Cup Semi Final Predictions

Ok so to be honest my previous predictions were not very accurate but in my defense, anything can happen in knock out games. These games bring out the best and worst in teams. Teams forget how to score goals (Brazil), teams play with composure and skill (Netherlands and Germany), some forget how to defend (Argentina) and some downright cheat (Uruguay).

Luis Suarez has not made many friends in South Africa at this world cup and his comments after the game will not help his cause:

“The ‘Hand of God’ now belongs to me,” Suarez told reporters. “Mine is the real ‘Hand Of God’. I made the best save of the tournament. Sometimes in training I play as a goalkeeper so it was worth it”.  He then posed for this picture before continuing.

“There was no alternative but for me to do that and when they missed the penalty I thought ‘It is a miracle and we are alive in the tournament’.

“Now we are in the semi-finals although I was very sad because no-one likes to be sent off.”

After this interview, he kicked a puppy, before going back to his hotel to feed on new born babies.

Alas that is soccer and sometimes the better team loses.

Sour grapes and personal feelings aside, we present our Semi Final predictions…

Uruguay vs Netherlands – 6th July 2010

The Uruguayans have an uber toit defence, only conceeding 2 goals in in the 5 games so far. Even though they have lost Suarez, they still have a quality player in Diego Forlan. His free kick goal against Ghana was sublime and he will be looking for more of the same against the Netherlands.

It looks like they will be without their captain Diego Lugano who limped off in the Quarters and they will miss him as he has been inspirational so far. This the last South American team left in the tournament and they do have the potential to get to the Finals but will be the underdogs in today’s game.

The Netherlands came back from an early goal down against Brazil and slowly made their way back into the game, eventually equalising early in the 2nd half. After which they took a firm hold on proceedings, clinching their spot in the Semis with Wesley Sneijder scoring a blinder. With guys like Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben in their side and all playing well they must fancy their chances.

My money is on the Netherlands for this game. You get the feeling that they have not yet played to their true potential and can certainly get better. They have fantastic support and I for one am keen on seeing more of it, especially people wearing cheese hats. Hup Hup Holland!

Venue: Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town

Kick-off: 8:30pm

Prediction: Netherlands 2-1
