Super 14 Previews and Predictions

Friday 14 May

Crusaders vs Brumbies, Christchurch 09:35

So it is down to this, the final league games, and for these two teams a ‘must win’. Exciting times! Last week the Saders played excellent rugga and neeaaarly beat the Bulls in the process. The Brumbies beat a pretty uninterested Highlanders side with a 4 try bonus point at the death. This will be like a test match with a win at all costs attitude evident all over the place. Brumbies have not beaten the Crusaders at home since 2000, when Giteau was still in diapers and I don’t see them doing it this year either.
Prediction: Crusaders by 5.

Waratahs vs Hurricanes, Sydney 11:40

This game is super hard to predict. It is gonna be tight and no mistake. The Waratahs beat an average Chiefs team last week after looking average themselves the week before. The Canes have been hitting good form and are looking the better of these two sides but the Tahs are infamous for winning the tight affairs. They are like first years trying to score at a night club, persistent and keen regardless of how boring or ugly things may get. I reckon if the Canes can front up with their forwards, the backs will win this one for them. Expect some big hits and lots of cursing by Nonu.
Prediction: Canes by a Jager shot.

Sharks vs Western Force, Durban 19:10

The Sharks threw the script out the window last week and took everyone, especially the Stormers by surprise. Ruan Pienaar played a blinder as did Old-man river Terblanche but the victory was set up with a powerful forward display led from the front by John ‘please choose me at hooker Smit’. The Force were soundly beaten by a resurgent Cheetahs team. Embarrasing!! I can’t see them beating a Sharks team that is making everyone ask why they didn’t play like this at the start of the season. The reason… Andy Goode.
Prediction: Sharks by 10 to 20.

Blues vs Chiefs, Canberra 09:35

Apparently the Chiefs are fielding 7 or so new players in order to test the depth in their squad. I don’t hear anyone complaining about this; surely it is not in the spirit of the game? The Blues have just returned from SA after thrashing the Lions, so the travel factor may come into this one but I still expect them to say “Choice bro, welcome to Super footy’ to the newbies as they smash them all over the park.
Prediction: Blues by 7 to 15

Reds vs Highlanders, Brisbane 11:40

The Reds played better this season than anyone expected them too, except maybe Quade’s mum. The Highlanders have had another poor season and I can’t see them beating the Reds at home. The Reds have a mathematical snowball’s chance of still making the semis and will know by the time they play whether or not it is still possible. Either way, expect them to finish with a solid victory.
Prediction: Reds by 10 to 15.

Cheetahs vs Lions, Welkom 15:00

This game has been moved to the North West stadium so it is not specifically a home game for the Cheetahs anymore but it is the Lions they are playing so this may not matter at all. Dick Muir has benched Killian, the one shining light bulb in a sea of darkness and poo, nice one Dicky. I would love for everything to click for the Lions but I just don’t see it happening. Cheetahs are playing well as a team and they should win this one comfortably.
Prediction: Cheetahs by 7 to 15.

Stormers vs Bulls, Newlands 17:05

A lot has been written about the Bulls sending a ‘B’ team to Newlands, maybe too much. Truth be told I reckon most teams would have done the exact same thing given a chance. Also this ‘B’ team would more than likely beat most the of the bottom teams on the log. Ok, maybe not but definitely the Lions. Bakkies is captain, which should be awesome to watch and De Wet Barry is starting against his old team. Expect the Bulls team to come out firing but to fade in last 15 min or so. I am going to be there and am hoping for tries, beer, good times and possibly some late night streaking.
Prediction: Stormers by 10 to 20

Semis:
Bulls vs Crusaders
Stormers vs Hurricanes
